My last newsletter featured the first look at Adele and Christopher. So today, I’m offering you a more intimate glance into their book. It’s one of my favorite scenes featuring Christopher teaching Adele to waltz. I hope you enjoy it.

“Lord Dorrington has requested your presence in the parlor, Anne,” he said.

“Another lesson.” She sighed dusting her hands on her apron and then removing the garment. “What is it today, Jameson? Introductions? Conversational etiquette?”

“Dancing, I believe.” His lips quirked up in an amused smile. “One of your favorites, if I am not mistaken.”

Adele could not stop the smile from gracing her lips. Dancing had always been one of her favorite activities, second to reading. As she ascended the stairs, a small bounce in her step lightened her heart. He wished to teach her to dance, did he? Well, he would be surprised how quickly she learned. In fact, he might learn a few things from her during this lesson.

The thought of being his dance partner created flutters of excitement in her chest. She wished for nothing more than to lose herself in the music, in the movements.

She entered the parlor and noted all the furniture had been arranged to give them adequate space to dance.

Lord Dorrington stood before a Victrola, arranging a disk on the machine.

“You summoned me, my lord?” she asked by way of announcing her presence.

He glanced over his shoulder. “Yes, I believe there are a few more details we must practice before the ball.” He lowered the arm of the machine and the room filled with sweet, familiar music.

Almost without prompting, Adele felt her body begin to sway with the melody. A waltz. How delightful. She caught herself before he turned around.

When he did, he approached her. “Have you ever danced before, Anne?”

“Once or twice,” she lied.

He offered his hand in invitation. “Would you care to dance?”

“Nothing would delight me more,” she replied with a demure nod and took his hand.

Lord Dorrington drew her into his arms. Their bodies aligned perfectly creating a balance between them. She drew her stance tight, keeping her arms solid, her left hand pressed against his shoulder while her other lay clasped in his.

The heat rose between them as he led her into the dance. He took his time, attempting to guide her in the basic motions. Alas, her body would not be denied as the music infused with her soul. The lessons she savored so long ago came back with a simple turn on the dance floor.

Adele closed her eyes, allowing him to lead, but also allowing the steps to arise from her memories. She savored the music and the dance. With every pass, she found her heart growing lighter as well as her steps.

“I believe you lied to me, Anne.” Lord Dorrington’s voice interrupted her moment of bliss.

Her eyes snapped open, meeting his curious yet pointed expression. “Whatever do you mean?”

“You dance better than I do,” he said with a lopsided smile. “How many times have you waltzed before?” His gaze dropped to her lips, then back again to her eyes.

“A few,” she admitted in part. Truth be told, the waltz had always been her favorite dance to practice, even if she never had the opportunity to dance in a social setting before.

Together, they continued the dance, but the lesson became lost along the way. With their bodies moving to the music, their gazes fused, Anne realized how much she enjoyed this moment. She committed every detail to memory. Her first true waltz, and with Lord Dorrington.

Adele marveled at how far she had come. From distrusting to disinterested to disarmed. Lord Dorrington enlightened her to a great many things it seemed.

His grip tightened on her waist as they spun faster, attempting to match the tempo in perfect synchronization. Everywhere his body pressed against hers heated with a delicious friction. She longed to lean against him fully, to feel his warmth seep into her.

Her gaze dropped to his mouth. The softness of his lips contrasted with the sharp angles of his face. Lord Dorrington, with all his dark, brooding features and isolated eccentricities, cut a fine and quite handsome gentleman.

“Why have you not married?” Adele asked, regretting the question as it fell from her lips.

A pang of sadness pierced his eyes before he replied. “Marriage requires intimacy.” He paused. “Who would want a broken man?”

“I believe we are all broken in some way,” Adele responded, her voice gentle.

He glanced away for a moment before meeting her gaze with his own. Lord Dorrington smiled.

Adele quelled the nervous flutter in her stomach. Lord have mercy, but her heart could not take the ache any longer. Why did he affect her so?

His grip on her waist tightened, drawing her closer. Their steps slowed until it became a calm sway in the midst of the storm of attraction brewing between them.

“You are a strange little bird,” Lord Dorrington said in awe. “Somehow I feel a connection to you in ways I cannot comprehend. You quite baffle me.”

“Your compliment leaves me speechless.” She batted her lashes and smiled.

He spun her, shaking the simpering debutante from her display. He leaned close, his lips nearly brushing her ear. “You are far too clever to play coy, Anne.”

Saints above, she would have melted or run from the room, but his arms held her fast. Every fiber of her being protested and craved his proximity, his touch. Adele dared hope for more, even though her rational mind told her to push him away.

She pulled back enough to gaze into his eyes, dark and deep like the sea at midnight. How she longed to brush the wayward lock of hair back away from his face. His handsome face betrayed his desire, and yet she saw the hesitation in every breath he took.

He could have stolen her soul in that instant, and she would have relinquished it without a single solitary regret. Adele dared not speak for fear of shattering the fragile sacred moment.

*sigh* This scene makes my heart flutter. I wish I had someone to waltz with me. My poor husband has two left feet when it comes to dancing. Although bless him, he does try.

Thank you for all the support and encouragement. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me.

Until we meet again, may your bookshelves be full and your hearts even more so.

All my love,

Kirsten

Announcement!

I’m sad to say my publisher will be closing their doors on May 1st of this year. The last year and a half have been an amazing experience. I’ve learned so much as an author and have grown much more confident in my writing while working with the wonderful staff at Breathless Press. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and I must move forward with my journey.

What does this mean for me and my books?

Well, I have gained the rights to all of my work. So over the next few months, I will be tweaking and polishing the manuscripts while working to create new cover art. Then I will be re-releasing my titles as a self publishing author.

As of May 1st, my titles, An Irresistible Shadow, A Shadow’s Kiss, and A Cowboy Sunrise, will not be available for purchase in any format. My goal is to have them back in production by the fall. I’m hoping to take this opportunity to flesh out the stories a bit more and add some word count. These characters and their stories are important to me, and I want my readers to get the full experience.

In this moment of grief, there shall be a rebirth. I fully intend to restore my Shadow Guardians to you, my dear readers. And if all goes well, I shall add to their adventures in the future. Poor Angus. *wink*

Thank you for your support and encouragement. I shall post any updates concerning my books on this site. I look forward to the next step in my adventure. *cheers*

Teaser from A Shadow’s Kiss

In anticipation of my second book releasing next week, here is a scene from A Shadow’s Kiss.

The door to the great hall swung open, and she heard her brother, Angus. Tis about time he showed his face.

“Father,” he said. “I would like to introduce Alexander. He’s from the south.”

Madeline choked the wine as her head snapped up. She swallowed as delicately as she could, forcing herself to remain calm. Her hand trembled. It couldn’t be. The stranger’s broad shoulders stretched as he tipped his hood back revealing thick mahogany hair and ice blue eyes. Her hand flew to her throat. Why was he here? Her heart leapt. Has he come for me? She forced the delight down and sat patiently waiting for him to glance in her direction.

“My Laird.” He proffered a slight bow. When he rose, his eyes fell on Madeline. She sat forward, her mouth poised to speak when she saw him shake his head no. He returned his attention to her father. “I thank you for your hospitality.”

Madeline’s jaw snapped closed. She leaned back in her chair. What was he playing at? His voice sounded deeper with a rolling Scottish lilt. Sir Alexander. Those broad shoulders and profile gave him away, and she could never mistake his eyes. Ever. Madeline had spent far too many nights dreaming about him to forget even the slightest detail.

“Where are you from, Alexander? Who are your people?” Her father’s questions were curious and polite. She watched the byplay between the men, her mind spinning with questions.

“My mother is a daughter of Clan Kerr, from the south, near the border,” he said. She liked the sound of the Scottish brogue on his tongue. Without thinking, she licked her lips as his gaze flickered over her.

“What brings you this far north?” the Laird asked, leaning forward.

“I am searching for answers,” he said. She heard the hesitancy in his voice. Had she not known him, she would have missed it. Alexander wasn’t lying, but his words weren’t completely honest either. He was a terrible liar. She strived not to smirk, remembering several occasions when his half-truths were directed at her. Tonight, she would have the truth from him, even if it killed her.

Her father didn’t pry any further. “I hope you find what you’re after then.”

“I have,” Alexander replied, his gaze settling on Madeline for a brief moment then returning to the Laird.

Her father nodded and held up his cup. “I pray you, sit. Join our feast. You are welcome in my home and at my table.”

Alexander bowed, and with a passing glance in her direction, he joined Angus at the far side of the head table. She sat there, her appetite gone, waiting and watching. She needed to speak with him, but how? Madeline nibbled on some bread. The sound of laughter brought her attention back to her brothers. Alexander, laughing! She stared at him in complete disbelief. Who was he truly? The Alexander she knew never laughed, and he certainly could not be Scottish. Her eyes narrowed. He caught her scowl and tipped his cup to her, a grin still on his lips.

With an agitated huff, Madeline begged her father’s pardon and left the great hall. The memory of Alexander’s good humor haunted her as she approached the staircase leading to her chambers. Somehow she had to speak to him. She knew of one way to catch him alone: discover where he slept.

I hope you enjoyed it. If you did then check out my Shadow Guardian series from Breathless Press.

Her Favorite Vice Author Interview

Hello everyone, this week we have another special guest.

Holden Granger

Tell me a little about your book and what you write.

I’m Holden Granger, and my most recent book is Her Favorite Vice.  This story was a lot of fun to write, and I hope it will be a lot of fun to read! To sum it up, it’s the story of a young police detective, who has her first big case in which she must go undercover as a high-priced call girl. She has the help of her partner, who also pretends to be one of her clients. Together, they match wits with the corrupt judge who uses his office to run the call-girl operation.

Ten Questions:

  1. What motivates you to write?  I love to create stories, and I’ve found I love it even more when people can read and enjoy them.
  2. Top five most romantic films in your opinion:  Casablanca – Pretty Woman – An Affair to Remember – When Harry Met Sally – Say Anything
  3. Best Kiss scene in film: Undoubtedly the spaghetti scene in “Lady and the Tramp”
  4. Top three authors who have inspired you:  Mario Puzo, Anne Rice and Raymond Chandler
  5. What is your favorite subgenre of romance?  Right now I enjoy paranormal romance because it gives both writer and readr a chance to enter a new mythology, at least it should if it is done right!
  6. Do you have a favorite poem?  Shakespeare’s Sonnet 130 – it has fun with the classical ideas of romantic poetry
  7. What do you do in your free time, when you get it? I can’t remember!
  8. Any new projects on the burner? I always try to keep a couple going. I’m really excited about a paranormal romance I’m working on now.
  9. What is your secret indulgence? Pop music from the 80’s, I use it to set the mood when I write. Please don’t tell anyone.
  10. If you could do one thing right now, without consequences, what would it be?  Why? That’s the toughest question I’ve been asked! A lot of possibilities come to mind, but I’ll stick with a relatively tame one. I’d like to walk into the Oval Office and chat with the president. I’d love to get his perspective on a few issues.

Lightning Round:

Favorite season? Summer – less clothes

Biggest pet peeve? Know-it-alls

Favorite dessert? Anything with ice cream

Favorite color? A deep, dark red

Drink of choice? Vodka and water

Favorite band? Fleetwood Mac

Action flick or RomCom – why can’t I have both?

Cuddling  or making out – Making out for sure!

Video games or a good book – Good book without question

Pirate or cowboy – Pirate, I love the ocean

Sexy or sweet – sexy

Bonus: If you could meet one person in all of history, who would it be and why?

Maybe it is a cliché, but I would want to meet Abraham Lincoln. I’d like to tell him that all he suffered was not in vain.

Thank you very much, Holden, for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview and congratulations on your new release!

Interview with Author D.F. Kreiger

Author Interview:  D. F. Kreiger

Welcome and tell us a little about your book and what you write.

‘Ello, I’m D. F. Krieger and I have a problem. My book, Panthers and Precincts, doesn’t like to behave and fit into just one category. Oh no, it likes to stretch out so it fits Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Mystery/Thriller. My story is about a zoologist who discovers a literate panther and must correspond with a detective on a missing child case.

Ten Questions of Torture:

1. What motivates you to write?

If I did not, my insanity would soon outweigh my common sense and plans for death rays would shortly grace the walls of my home.

2. Top five most romantic films in your opinion.

Bram Stroker’s Dracula, Avatar, Practical Magic, Legend, The Proposal

3. Best Kiss scene in film?

The one that didn’t happen between Frodo and Sam in Lord of the Rings.

4. Top three authors who have inspired you?

Rachel Firasek because she wiped the floor with me during a crit session. It hurt, but I came out stronger for it. Piers Anthony, because reading his Xanth series taught me to write my own worlds, no matter how crazy they seemed to others. Christine Feehan, whose stories showed me love can be dark and still be enthralling.

5. What is your favorite subgenre of romance?

Uh, I do not comprehend this question. The answer must be “Magic,” then.

6. Do you have a favorite poem?

You hide behind your masquerade attire
Eyes that glitter betraying longing
Never do you utter a word

Nor give a smile more genuine then painted
Yet the conversation could never be clearer
The sway of our bodies is your voice

The light in your eyes a vivid smile
So loud, enticing amidst the color splashed world
Always at a distance am I kept

Though I yearn to see your face
Would that I could free your ties
Let you stand before me as you alone

“Hush and play the costumed monster”
Your eyes are bitter with regret
“Those here would run if they knew the truth”

My body holds you closer as I whisper my reply
“We are all monsters hidden by painted smiles”
Against gloved hand my claws dig deep

 7. What do you do in your free time, when you get it?

I kill things. Y’know, dragons, goblins, evil wizards. Oh, I also horseback ride and cross stitch.

8. Any new projects on the burner?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you.

9. What is your secret indulgence?

My husband. Oh, you didn’t mean that kind of… Okay. This is awkward…

10. If you could do one thing right now, without consequences, what would it be?  Why?

I would rob a bank and buy a horse farm where I would then run a horse rescue and pretend they were unicorns trapped in the mortal realm, hiding from humans.

Lightning Round:

Favorite season? The very beginning of fall, when the air is crisp, the sun is out, and the leaves are just turning.

Biggest pet peeve? Stupidity. No, seriously.

Favorite dessert? Video games! Well, if I’m a good girl and get all my work done, that’s what I get after dinner.

Favorite color? Purple! I thought everyone knew that by now.

Drink of choice? Iced sweet tea.

Favorite band? I have several. Depeche Mode, Blaqk Audio, and Julien-K

Action flick or RomCom?  I’m an action girl, all the way.

Cuddling  or making out.  Can I answer with “intimate moments that aren’t interrupted by my children?”

Video games or a good book.  That’s not fair. You know I’m just as much a diehard gamer as I am a writer.

Pirate or cowboy.  Neither. 😉

Sexy or sweet? Sexy

Bonus: If you could meet one person in all of history, who would it be and why?

Me in my past life. To, y’know, created paradoxes and stuff. I think it’d be fun.

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview, D. F. Kreiger.  We look forward to having you back again soon.  🙂

My Salute to the Scottish and their Brogue

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a sexy Scotsman.  Is it the kilt?  Their strength?  Their beautiful homeland?

While all those things are points in their favor, what clinches it for me is their accent.  I may be crazy, but there’s nothing sweeter than the sound of a deep Scottish brogue.  My addiction began at an early age when I saw Sean Connery in Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade.  The love of the accent only grew when I heard Gerard Butler, Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, and David Tennant.  Now I’m hopelessly lost in brogue.

I’ve never been to Scotland.  The only time I’ve ever heard the accent was in movies or interviews with actors who hail from Scotland.  So yes, I may have romanticized it a bit.  Just like I’ve done with the British accent.  That blame I lay at the feet of Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch.

1010400_503392423114443_123049011_n

Is there something wrong with a proud, red blooded American woman finding those accents irresistible?  No.

Everyone who knows me understands this fascination, this obsession I have.  They know it’s a part of what makes me unique.  They also know that it inspires my writing.

An Irresistible Shadow has a hero who is half Scottish.  The second book–I’m working on it now–will also feature a half Scottish hero.  There are plans for a third book in which the hero is one hundred percent Scottish Highlander.  It seems as though my subconscious refuses to relinquish the allure of Scotland and her handsome sons.  So I have to give Scotland some credit.  They know how to grow ’em.

My books also feature some very strong Scottish women, who I envy and admire.  The scenery sets the perfect backdrop for a story.  All in all, it’s no wonder that Scotland inspires me.

I tip my hat to you, Scotland, for bringing inspiration to this American girl and ruining me for any other accent…because yours is the most swoon worthy.  Hands down.
